沢田さんの作品づくりには、時代の移ろいや暮らしの変化を超えて 静かに積み重ねられてきた一貫した姿勢があります。 それは自分を表現するためではなく、 自然そのものに向き合い素材に耳を澄ますということ。 幼いころ、広い田園の中で地面のあたたかさや 空の色に包まれて育った沢田さんは、 自分が自然の一部であるという確かな感覚を、 今日に至るまで揺るぎなく持ち続けてきました。 作品もまた、自然の静かな気配やたたずまいを映し出し、 目立とうとすることなく、そこに在ります。 ふと立ち止まって自然の美しさや静けさに心を開いた人に、 深く沁み入るものとなっています。
近年は「なくすように、なくすように」という言葉の通り、 手を加えることよりも素材が本来持つ美しさを損なわぬように、 ただ静かに寄り添う姿勢がさらに強まっています。 木そのものが持つ静かな気配や、時を経て育まれる美しさをそっと引き出す。 沢田さんの作品は、作り手の思いを前に押し出すのではなく、 自らを消し自然の営みにそっと寄り添う彫刻なのです。
Over the course of many years and through various changes, sculptor Hideo Sawada's approach to creating his work has remained quietly consistent, transcending the passing of time and shifts in daily life. It is not solely about expressing himself, but about facing nature itself and listening closely to the material. Growing up in a vast rural landscape, embraced by the warmth of the earth and the colors of the sky, Sawada has carried with him a steadfast sense that he is part of nature — an awareness that has never wavered to this day. His works, too, reflect the quiet presence and subtle atmosphere of nature, existing without seeking attention. For those who pause and open their hearts to the beauty and stillness of the natural world, they offer a deep and lasting impression. In recent years, true to his refrain, “paring away, paring away,” his stance has become even more about quietly accompanying the material rather than altering it, seeking not to disturb the inherent beauty it holds. He draws out the quiet presence and cultivated beauty that wood nurtures over time. Sawada’s sculptures do not push forward the intentions of the maker, but instead erase the self, gently accompanying the workings of nature.
